Routine Exams and Teeth Cleaning
All good dental treatments are only recommended when needed, including checkups and cleanings. On average, you should attend regular checkup and cleaning appointments at least twice a year because oral bacteria (in the form of tartar) can become a serious threat if you wait longer. During each visit, your hygienist will carefully clean away traces of plaque and tartar from your teeth, preventing the oral bacteria that the films harbor from harming your teeth and gums. Your dentist will also perform a thorough examination, which includes a visual inspection and digital imaging equipment, when necessary.
Checkups and Screenings
Most dental health issues show visible signs before you can feel their presence, and routine exams allow your dentist to spot those signs even when you’re unable to. In addition to a careful visual inspection, Dr. Criss may also utilize the help of digital X-rays and an intraoral camera to gain a better view of your oral tissues and structures. By spotting the signs of dental disease as early as possible, you have a better chance at treating it without the need for an extensive procedure. Your exam will also include a comprehensive oral cancer screening to check for tissue abnormalities, such as sores, ulcers, lumps, lesions, or rough patches that might indicate oral cancer.
Dental and Ultrasonic Cleanings
While you can clean most dental plaque away by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing at least once, it’s common to miss a spot of plaque here and there. These spots can quickly calcify into tartar. Only professional cleaning equipment at your dentist’s office can effectively clean away tartar, and your hygienist will polish the crowns of your teeth to make it more difficult for plaque to develop before your next visit. If you exhibit signs of gingivitis (early gum disease), we may also recommend deep cleaning (or scaling and root planing) to remove bacteria from underneath your gums. Using advanced ultrasonic technology, we can gently break up plaque and tartar that has gathered on your teeth roots, and clean it away so your gums can heal.
