Compassionate Care for Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can range from an unexplainable toothache to obvious, severe tooth damage, and more. When an emergency occurs, the best thing you can do for your smile is to address the issue as soon as possible to alleviate the pain and stop any tooth damage from growing worse. Because time is of the essence in any emergency, we can often accommodate patients with a same-day visit to reduce the risks of further dental concerns. Depending on your exact emergency, we may even be able to restore your tooth in just a single visit.
Tips for an Emergency
- Relieving the pain – Dental emergencies often result in varying levels of pain, which you may be able to relieve temporarily until you can make it to your emergency appointment. Try placing an ice pack or cold compress on the appropriate side of your cheek, or take an over-the-counter pain reliever that you know is safe.
- Staunching the bleeding – If you notice bleeding around your tooth, stop it by biting down gently on moist, clean gauze for about ten minutes, or until the bleeding stops. Be sure to carefully rinse your mouth with warm water first, taking care to swish around the area that’s bleeding.
- Preserving lost tooth structure – If your tooth has broken or been knocked out of its socket, collect the tooth or piece of the tooth, if possible. Rinse it carefully with water, taking care not to touch the root or any ligaments, and bring it with you to your appointment. For a completely knocked out tooth, store it in a small container of milk to preserve it. If possible, your dentist will replant the tooth in its socket.
