- Watch when you brush and floss – Brushing and flossing your teeth every day is designed to help you control the accumulation of plaque and tartar on your teeth. Doing so stops the oral bacteria that form plaque from growing strong enough to attack your teeth and gums. When you brush and floss, do so in front of a well-lit mirror and watch carefully to ensure that you successfully clean every surface of every tooth.
- Snack responsibly and on a schedule – Oral bacteria create harmful substances that erode your tooth enamel and tooth structure, or irritate and inflame your gum tissues. They create these substances by metabolizing the nutrients in your food and beverages. The less often you snack throughout the day, the fewer of these substances your oral bacteria can produce.
- Drink plenty of water – Water is a natural bacteria neutralizer and is the main component on your saliva. Instead of drinking sugary drinks that could make oral bacteria stronger, drink more water to promote a healthy flow of saliva and help better control harmful oral bacteria.
