About our practice

In June 2019, Dr. Josh Petersen joined the practice. Together their new office has a welcoming reception area with comfortable chairs, a fireplace, and lots of windows to enjoy the view of the surrounding hills. We have a coffee bar for our patients and guests, with cold beverages also available. At HillsView Dental you will be greeted by name right away by a smiling face at the front desk.

Dr. Brian Criss acquired his first practice in April 1997, and in 2004 bought his second office. To better serve his patients, Dr. Criss moved his practice to its current location at 1687 Tablerock Road in Rapid City, SD, in October 2016.

Our office is located on Highway 16, just a half-hour from Mount Rushmore, in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. We are next door to Peaceful Pines Senior Living Community and West River Periodontics.

Our doctors

Joshua T. Petersen, DDS

Dr. Joshua T. Petersen is a 2019 graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Dentistry in Lincoln, Nebraska. While there, he was a member of the American Student Dental Association and graduated in the upper ranks of his class. Prior to dental school, Josh attended the University of South Dakota where he was involved in many clubs and organizations and the university track and field team. He earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science in 2015.

Dr. Petersen truly enjoys his time spent with patients, establishing relationships, and providing the highest standard of oral healthcare. After completing dental school, he returned to the Black Hills, where he grew up loving camping, hiking, snowboarding, mountain biking, and spending his summers on the water. He also loves being involved in the community by playing rec league sports and volunteering with the Young Life organization.

Brian G. Criss, DDS

Dr. Brian G. Criss received his bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Wyoming in 1989. In 1996, he obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Dentistry, and started his own practice, HillsView Dental. In addition to his degrees and extensive experience in providing high-quality family dental care, Dr. Criss is certified in CEREC restoration using CAD/CAM technology, obstructive sleep apnea treatment, and management, as well as TMJ/craniofacial pain management.

Dr. Criss also takes annual mission trips to Haiti to provide dental care to those in need, and he is a member of the following organizations:

American Sleep and Breathing Academy
American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM)
Parakaleo Internal (Board of Directors): mission organization in Haiti

While in the office, Dr. Criss loves building connections with patients and getting to know them beyond the doctor-patient relationship. Outside of the office, he enjoys camping, playing the piano, reading, traveling, and spending time with his family.
